The BMW iX3 has been crowned the 2026 World Car of the Year, marking a significant milestone for BMW. The all-electric SUV is also expected to make its way to Nepal, adding further relevance to its global recognition for the local market.
This victory represents the brand’s second overall win in the prestigious awards program, following the success of the BMW 3 Series (E90) back in 2006. Similarly, the iX3 also secured the 2026 World Electric Vehicle title, pushing BMW’s total tally to eleven awards over the 22-year history of the competition.
The results were determined by a panel of 98 automotive journalists from 33 countries, who evaluated eligible vehicles as part of their professional work. Final votes were cast via secret ballot and independently audited by KPMG.

The iX3 emerged as the winner from an initial pool of 58 global contenders. The final shortlist, announced on March 3, 2026, included the Hyundai Palisade and the Nissan Leaf alongside BMW’s electric SUV. In the final standings, the Leaf secured second place.
To qualify for the award, vehicles must meet strict criteria: annual production exceeding 10,000 units, pricing below traditional luxury thresholds in key markets, and availability across at least two major global regions spanning separate continents within the defined eligibility window from January 1, 2025 to March 30, 2026.

This victory additionally breaks a four-year streak of dominance by Hyundai and Kia. However, Hyundai still secured recognition, with the Hyundai Ioniq 6 N taking home the 2026 World Performance Car title.
Beyond the vehicle awards, BMW’s leadership was also recognized, as CEO Oliver Zipse was named 2026 World Car Person of the Year.
The award for the iX3 was accepted in New York by Mike Reichelt, who highlighted the model as the first production vehicle under BMW’s Neue Klasse platform—introducing advancements in design, range, charging capability, driver assistance, and a new user interface system.
From a technical standpoint, the iX3 is offered in the iX3 50 xDrive configuration, featuring dual electric motors delivering a combined 345 kW (469 hp) and 645 Nm of torque. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds.

Power comes from a 108.7 kWh battery pack, offering a WLTP-rated range of up to 805 km. The system also supports ultra-fast charging at up to 400 kW, enabling approximately 372 km of range to be added in just 10 minutes.
While this marks BMW’s first win in the World Electric Vehicle category, the brand has previously been recognized for sustainability-focused models. It claimed World Green Car titles in 2008 with the BMW 1 Series 118d and again in 2014 with the BMW i3.
